Skincare and Makeup During Pregnancy

Skin is the biggest organ of the body. Apart from the manifold effects pregnancy has on a woman, her skin responds to the growing fetus as well. What you apply on the skin gets absorbed into the bloodstream and can influence the embryo. This includes all of the makeup products and skin care cosmetics that we keep slathering on without caring paying heed to the ingredients inside it.

Believe it or not, I learned this the hard way. I bought a local foundation because my skin was flaring up during the first trimester of my pregnancy. It wasn’t even a new product; this was one of my very old go to makeup product. Long story short, I had an allergic reaction after one week of use and my acne was worse than ever.

At that point, it hadn’t occurred to me that the ingredients in my foundation were absorbed by my skin until my gynecologist pointed that out. All I was worried about was that my acne was itchy, it burnt like hell and I couldn’t get any treatment for it because most medicines weren’t recommendable during the first trimester.

Makeup during Pregnancy

So one way or another, I was screwed by my lack of awareness about which products to use during pregnancy.

I could never even think about risking my fetus. So I began researching. I pulled all-nighters for several weeks trying to find a homemade remedy for my acne. I also began reading articles on how to adjust skincare and makeup routine during pregnancy.

Read this content carefully girls, it has all the information you need to carefully amp up your skincare during pregnancy.

DON’T Be Naive

Dear girls, there is a thing called marketing . . . for any product to succeed, the company puts in a lot of efforts to make it seem like the most flawless thing in the world. But trust me, even when a company labels something as organic; it might not

Cosmetic Ingredients to Look Out For

Women, dear beautiful, educated women . . . LEARN to read labels and invest your precious time in reading the ingredients on the product you are planning to buy. It would be even better if you decide to do an online research or watch some reviews about the item before buying. This will save you from bigger trouble later.

I won’t go into the details of WHY you need to avoid the following list of ingredients, but steer clear of these components and if you find them in any of the makeup products that you use, run in the opposite direction . . . well not opposite direction, just run towards the door . . . and slam it hard. Nothing is important than the tiny human that is totally depending on you!

Let’s move forward to the list;

  • Parabens
  • Retinyl palmitate and Retinol (vitamin A)
  • Phthalates
  • BP-3
  • Dioxin
  • Oxybenzone
  • BHA and BHT
  • Ethanolamines (MEA/DEA/TEA)
  • Dibutyl phthalate
  • Para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), it is already banned in a lot of sunscreens due to irritation
  • Bisphenol A (BPA)
  • Diazolidinyl Urea
  • Avobenzone, Parsol
  • Octyl methoxycinnamate (OMC)
  • Phenylmercuric salts, nitrate, acetate
  • Salicylic Acid (if allergic)
  • Soy-based products (if allergic)
  • Triclosan
  • Octocrylene
  • Oxybenzone
  • Hydroquinone or glutathione
  • Fragrance

The reasons for avoidance of above-mentioned products are different; some are directly involved in effecting the birth defects on the embryo, some are extremely absorbent and lead to some sort of hormonal imbalance and others are allergy-prone components during pregnancy. You need to look out for these ingredients in all sorts of makeup products ranging from lipsticks to sunscreens to cleansers and masks.
